It’s a new year and a new decade, and for Senses of Cinema this milestone also represents the dawn of our third decade. In this issue, we continue one of our longest and most popular traditions: the annual world poll.

We’ve got over 140 entries for you to dive into as we look back at what the writers and journalists and industry professionals, academics and curators and cinephiles have loved across 2019. You can start from the beginning and go sequentially, or dip in and out as you prefer, but be prepared to add a whole range of films that have passed you by to your 2020 watchlist. We think you’ll enjoy working your way through the best of 2019, and that’s thanks to our tremendous contributors who make the World Poll such an important part of the Senses of Cinema year. So head over to the Introduction and then plunge headfirst into this year’s entries.

Alongside the world poll, we have a global panorama of festival reports, with Senses scribes reporting back on the latest in contemporary cinema from the Vancouver, Reykjavik, Hamburg, Tbilisi, Pingyao, Busan, StopTrik, Cottbus and Cámara Lúcida festivals.

That’s all for this pared back new year’s number, but we’ll be back in three months’ time with a fully-stocked issue. From now on, we will be running to a slightly altered timetable, with new issues coming out in January (with the world poll), April, July and October every year. So watch out for our April issue, and until then enjoy reading up on our contributors and readers look back on the year 2019 in cinema.
